Pain Management, Pills, and Physiatrists

Yesterday, I had the worst knee pain I've had in awhile, which explains my lack of blogging. The pain is typically caused due to my "twisted" gait. My knees rub together, which causes the tendons on the fronts of my kneecaps to become inflamed. Apparently, the inflammation was severe yesterday, and the only reason for that is the way I slept. Ooh, it must have been a rough Monday night!

Because I knew I had the appointment today, I didn't bother calling the doctor. Instead, I mentioned it today, and the doctor added a new responsibility to my life as a college student. For now, I'm taking 440 mg of Aleve (which has the same effect as Naproxin and is just cheaper...literally $.03 a pill) on the nights before I know that my physical activity will increase the next day. So yes, I'm glad to have found something that works that's not a strong drug. For years, the orthopedic surgeon was telling me that the only thing they could prescribe for me is something a step below vicodin (not sure what the drug was and we didn't even get that far), which meant that I couldn't take it and go to school, which is where I endured the most pain.

(For you to understand the reasons why I endured so much pain while there, you must understand my high school. It was 1.6 miles from one end to the other. During my junior year, I made the trek twice a day, and for senior year, I flat out refused that. The special ed staff accommodated the need for extra time to get from one class to the other when the distances were so great like that, but it still didn't make any sense. Junior year is your hardest year of high school, and it was the year that I came home exhausted EVERY SINGLE DAY. Fair? Not at all.)

He also mentioned that he wants me to see a physiatrist sometime in the near future. I wasn't sure what that was until he explained it, and I'm still a bit unclear. Does anyone have any information for me? It would be greatly appreciated.

I'm just relieved that the appointment was done before college, and while I'm extremely saddened by the fact that my condition can only be maintained and not improved, I'm ready to grab life by the horns and see what's in store for me!

Glad the appointment is now behind you. On with school! Sorry you can only maintain, but at least you 'can' maintain. Does that make sense??

Thanks, ladies.

Yes, ABandCsMom, it does. Can you send me your email address so that we can communicate that way? Wanted to ask you a question.

What questions do you have about a psychiatrist? Generally, they're there to help you sort your feelings and help with whatever stresses you. They are obligated to listen to you, and it's cofidential, so you can tell them things that you don't want others to know. This might be good for you.
